Who are the learners and how will they benefit from this project?
The learners are refugees living in the ACT. They are a marinalised group who have difficulty accessing education, training and work. They are currently working for No Sweat Fashions (NSF) and will be able to access learning and skills recognition in the workplace through this project.

Where are your learners located?
They will be located at NSF studio which is located at UC Kaleen High School

How will training be delivered?
We will deliver training through mobile technology namely ipads. Participants will access the learning through the ipads at their workstation.

Describe the importance of this project for your target learners and explain how it will meet the strategic objective of the E-learning for Participation and Skills funding to utilise innovative e-learning practices and / or high speed broadband-enabled technologies to deliver e-learning projects and strategies which improve individuals’ access to gain pre-vocational skills, skills in priority employment areas, or to pursue educational pathways to gain higher qualifications?

What are the intended outcomes from your project, and how you will measure them?
We would like the participants to become computer literate and engaged in learning. We want them to become empowered in their industry, undertake gap training in the workplace and therefore move through the Clothing Production Certificate 3 and into the Certificate IV. We will undertake program evaluations as well as interview the employers and stakeholders. Initial surveys will be undertaken in person with us supporting the learners. A measure of the program will be the ability of learners to move towards self evaluation at the mid to end of the project.

We are delivering skills recognition for the Certificate 3 in Clothing Production as well as unpacking and delivering training via ipads of two x UOCs to refugees. These two UOC's have been selected as they are probably the two main gaps we have identified from people coming into the clothing production industry.

September 2012
The first month saw us gearing up as a team and working out roles and responsibilites. We notified our client/industry partner that we had won the funding and started discussing the actual needs of each participant.
October 2012
Nervous month, what do we already have, analysing our face to face learning resources and how we can tailor these for ipad delivery. It sounded easy when we first thought about it and put the idea to NSF but now we have to work out exactly how to take these toolboxes, insert new video, text and photos as well as manage the language issues that the refugees have. We also spent some time working out our own baseline data requirements ony to discover that this survey will be given to was a good thing to do though as we have established questions we will need to also ask to ascertain the baseline for skills and terminology for participants.
We have also attended a presentation by Box Hill which opened our eyes to the pitfalls of delivering using ipads and I also attended 'toolbox unpacking and tailoring training'. By the end of the month our confidence has returned (a little) and once again the project feels achievable.
First interviews with the participants this Friday - so then we'll really see what level they are working at.
November 2012
This month we met at NSF based at UC KAleen HS to view facilities and see how we are going to operate the project. Meeting with the HS principle and IT manager was enlightening adn some issue falgs are becoming visible. WE'll see how this goes.
We are well on the way to bringing together the resourses we have but are now looking at whether interactive PDFs might be a better option than ibook for teh rpl tool.
We met with the participants for the first time and the actual scale of the roject has hit us. These are a very diverse group of people from Burma, Iraq, Afganistan and Ski Lanka. The particiapnts range in age from 25 to 65 and all but two are female. Their language and computer literacy skills are as diverse as their ethnicity. Its going to be challenging
December 2012
In late November we started introducing the refugees to the ipads. Once again Im feeling positive. They embraced the ipads and mangaged to get into google and into notes.
Back at CIT we have started putting the rpl text from word into PDF and we have decided on interactive PDFs as teh means to deliver the rpl part of the project, This is thnaks to Stephan Schmits presentation. Issues though are generally around the backwards forwards between getting the final look/content exactly right beore turning it into a pdf. We'll get there.
January 2013
While Ive been working on the rpl tool, Nora has been working away at learning to negotiate the ipad and create ibooks. I dont think this is the path we expected to take but it looks good and works. We have inserted existing videos and text and still need to create the activities.We have purchaed a tool box to use for one of the UOCs but its not looking as useful as we expected. It might end up beinghe basis but with out content.
We have recorded voice to insert over the text in both the ibook and the PDF. Next step will be inserting these.

February 2013
Late January onwards we have started meeting with the refugees at NSF. It hasnt been an easy couple of weeks getting through the survey for this project with the refugees. We have been using it as a means to guage their level of interaction with the ipads and also their ability to negotiate interactive processes within a program.
The issues: UC Kaleen HS has a really secure internet adn we are unable to get past the first 'next' in the survey. This has resulted in me borrowing ipads from several people - personal devices - and accessing the internet through my own iphone hotspot. Time consuming and could set us back, but at least we might be able to resolve with UC Kaleen HS. But what it did allow was a one on one approach to do the survey. some things to consider. One of the questions asked the participants ro tick what internet/social media tools they use. There is no ability to move past this question without answering and no place to tick - none of the above.
Whilst I was doing the suverys with the participants they were also working in groups to use the ipads and start working out how they would be collecting their evidence for the rpl. This was a great session. They get it! They were recording video, taking photos and recording their voices. They then problem solved and worked out how to save these into albums on the ipads.
Next week - we work out how to transfer this information into drop box, icloud...which way to go. I feel sure that UC Kaleen HS internet/wifi will dictate this due to the security.
March 2013
what a month. Frustrating yet also we are achieving so much. Frustrating becayse the internand firwalls keep letting us down. And even when we decide not to rely on the internet and we manaully connect the ipads to the computer we discovered that they are so secure that we cant copy from them. So our delightful group of refugees who are working really hard and documneting their evidence and work to submit through moodle are stuck in the middle. All this great evidence that cant be removed from the ipads onto the computer. This week we'll try and create dropboxes. but even this will cause us problems because our refugees dont all have email addresses. So it looks like we'll have one dropbox from which they will create their own folders of evidence.
this month they have been working through a new product range with the employer No Sweat Fashion. when we set up the rpl tool we looked at whay was achievable in the workplace and necessary in the workplace and this particular product range has been developed to ensure they do the learning required to meet this unit. They have a dedicated participant gathering video adn photographic evidence.
We are going well on our products. the RPL tool is with a graphic deisgner who is working out how best to set up our interactive documents. this is being dictated by the level of IT and literacy the particiapnts have.
The 2 x ibooks are looking great. After much trial and error and loss of information we have settled on Book Creator for iPad. Both team member Nora and Naomi are working on this and its intuitive.
Our communication team member Deb has started proofing the books and we hope to have them in the workshop with the participants in 3 weeks.
Whats holding this all together....Moodle or elearn. We have 2 sites that the participants will use and all links and eportfolio locations will be here. Ive checked...PHEW! we can get through the firewall with this.
