Project Profile:

Who are the learners and how will they benefit from this project?
Students studying the diploma of Children's Services who are thinking of articulating into a Degree in Early Childhood at UC.
Students studying Diplomas in Community Work who may select the Advanced Diploma to articulate into ACU Social Work degree

Where are your learners located?
Canberra; Woden Campus main location, but students can access across CIT locations icluding Gungahlin particularly for those who need to access online.

How will training be delivered?
This course is designed to support the academic progress of the students; providing support through the Student Support- online assistance, fact sheets and links and ability to make face to face appointments. The Librarians will target learning and support that addresses the learning outcomes and assessment requirments particularly focussed on the research components of subjects the students are studying.

Describe the importance of this project for your target learners and explain how it will meet the strategic objective of the E-learning for Participation and Skills funding to utilise innovative e-learning practices and / or high speed broadband-enabled technologies to deliver e-learning projects and strategies which improve individuals’ access to gain pre-vocational skills, skills in priority employment areas, or to pursue educational pathways to gain higher qualifications?
This project aims to enhance the academic ability of the students to become more self-sufficient in their learning journey. Students are able ot access information and assistance fro mthe one place online.
What are the intended outcomes from your project, and how you will measure them?
The main outcome is to see an increase in the number of students articulating into higher education pathways - our initial pilot showed a marked increase in students in Community Services courses taking up the Advanced Diploma that articulates into ACU. We would like to see this percentage rate maintained and will assess the number of successful students in both the Community Services and Children's Services areas that articulate into higher pathways.
We will keep data on access to the course, (types and times- is it more around assessment time).

What are the needs of the target learner group/s and relevant stakeholders (employers, community, training organisations etc)?
Students in these courses are frequently from lower SES backgrounds, many with poor academic self-esteem due to past educational experiences. Students require support at the emotional and academic level to succeed. The universities where these students articulate to are interested in the academic progress and support this project, they would liek to see students more university ready academically.
Describe the learning approach, program and technologies to be used... (Include details about where the training and trials will take place, the number of learners and the qualification, units(s) or skills sets to be delivered.)

Feb 2013 update:
had a great team meeting today. Staff have been upskilling themselves and developing some great resources and supports for students. Such as : glossaries; Starting Blocks for students on how to write reflective journals (needed for the student cohort); how to write reports; some go anime resources; powerpoints and we have even trialled a three way interview with a previous student on their experiences and how they used Student Support services for emotional/personal and academic support (however we will use the voice but not images of the student for this due to cultural reasons). We are targeting some of our materials to students from ESL backgrounds. The Librarians have also been pulling togetehr resources and activities and inserting links to Lib guides on how to do things. We are looking to create some eBooks out of previously produced relevant materials, seeking assistance for this one. We aim to drop this into a class CRNs by the end of next week, then will be going out to the classes to introduce it to students. Staff have found it challenging and a little confusing at times, but have embraced the project and have dedicated a great deal of time developing and ensuring the resources target the student's needs.

September 2012 met/contact with members of the team (8 staff, two involved in project management; two each from the Learning Centre (Library); Student support (Migrant and Disability workers); Teaching Centre (Education Manager and Teacher in children's Services). Talked about the course we are extending and updating for the new and existing type of students. The course will be trialled again for Com Services students with more student support elements the course. New cohort of Children's Services students will aslo be trialled with this course-
October 2012
Staff not previously invovled in stage one- are in process of training to use new technologies (for broadband) to develop resources.

November 2012 New resources are being developed.

Feb 2013: Opened the course to the students in the Diploma of Children's Services this month. We demonstrated the course in class and left the students to complete the survey and use the course. On checking later the students were accessing the glossaries developed for their courses and the librarian on line support.

March 2013.
We enrolled students from the Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management over the last week. These students are aiming to complete articulate into the Bachelor of Social work at ACU.
Data on the Children's Service class shows they are using the course.
Our eLearn system is colsed until next week- we are undergoing a big upgrade. So unable to check on statistics until next week.

April 2013
we were plodding along in April, students were using the glossaries and accessing the courses around assessment times.
some heavy useage by students at the end of the month indicates assessments due and they are using their own skills to search for assistance.

May 2013
We have put up the post course learner surveys for students, although many will not possibly complete these as the courses continue until the end of second term- end of June.

June 2013
Having problems uploading the case study into this, have dropped it inot the Dropbox outputs folder.
