Who are the learners and how will they benefit from this project?

The target group of learners in this project are existing employees engaged as teachers, educational support staff, early childhood workers and vocational trainers in the early childhood, primary and vocational sectors.

Where are your learners located?
Learners are located in the Australian Capital Territory.

How will training be delivered?
Training will be delivered using a combination of existing online tools on the moodle platform, combined with a minimum of 1 days classroom based training with augmented reality, a tool for use in (or out of!) the classroom.

Describe the importance of this project for your target learners and explain how it will meet the strategic objective of the E-learning for Participation and Skills funding to utilise innovative e-learning practices and / or high speed broadband-enabled technologies to deliver e-learning projects and strategies which improve individuals’ access to gain pre-vocational skills, skills in priority employment areas, or to pursue educational pathways to gain higher qualifications?

There is no doubt that first aid and emergency response knowledge and skills are required by employees within the education and early childhood sectors where there is a responsibility to provide a safe environment for children and students. What is increasing in the school environment is the need for skills that go beyond the standard first aid and consider broader emergencies (such as those arising from custody disputes) that tend to result in school lockdowns. A unique aspect of integrating an innovative technology into ths particular training is the potential for widespread application beyond the education sector and into any environment where first aid training is required. It has the capacity to revolutionise the way first aid training is delivered nationally across a range of priority sectors and in both rural and remote locations, using wireless technologies through iPad or Android smart phones and tablets.

What are the intended outcomes from your project, and how you will measure them?

Learners: The primary outcome of our project is the delivery of 50 Statements of Attainment to individuals engaged in the skilled occupation area of education professionals. This will be measured by successful completion.

Stakeholders: A secondary outcome will be a greater capacity for VET providers and staff to use broadband-enabled, and emerging technologie,s and the potential for the productn utilised in the deliveryn to be made available to the wider education & VET community. This will be measured by the return of product to the framework, and the post project uptake of the technology. It also has the advantage of, if we can engage teachers as students through the use of e-learning technologies, we are increasing the probability of them seeing the potential for e-learning technologies in their own teaching contexts. Project reports detailing lessons learnt, suggestions for implementation, and a ‘blueprint’ for implementation will support strategic implementation decisions.

Measurement and evaluation will occur from project reports, and student and facilitator feedback on the benefits the technology has brought to the learning experience. We anticipate being able to promote the outcomes through the framework locally and nationally, the school network, websites, the chamber of commerce and our RTO networks.

What are the needs of the target learner group/s and relevant stakeholders (employers, community, training organisations etc)?

The target group of learners in this project are existing employees engaged as teachers, educational support staff, early childhood workers and vocational trainers in the early childhood, primary and vocational sectors. Learning Options has implemented a range of training solutions in the schools sector where needs focus on timing,scheduling, budgets, and innovative ways of delivering learning that in many cases is mandatory refresher training. In regards to timing and scheduling, the training we do in the school sector is often scheduled after hours and mainly in school holidays, where we coordinate with the education directorate on allocated professional development days. This means that schools do not have to engage substitute teachers to take classes or the costs associated with relief teachers. It should be noted that schools in the ACT are on a schools based management system where they are responsible for their own budget decisions, and PD budgets are rarely higher than $2000 for the whole of the school support and administrative staff. We also have to factor in bigger class numbers. Training is often scheduled to coincide with large scale conferences and we need capacity to manage 50+ participants at any one time.

Describe the learning approach, program and technologies to be used... (Include details about where the training and trials will take place, the number of learners and the qualification, units(s) or skills sets to be delivered.)

The delivery strategy will be a combination of online and face to face delivery. Participants will complete a series of online activities in Moodle including quizzes and formative tasks. This will be followed by one day of 'face to face' training in a school environment. It is on the second day that we see the huge potential for augmented reality applications to be utilised in two specific areas. The first is in the visualisation of emergency scenarios requiring a whole of school response using location based AR technology. The second is in a real life game of 'operation' where participants using the application can visualise internal body workings simply by holding their iPad up to a body part for example, a graphic of the cardiovascular system appears over a person's body. We will, at a minimum, offer training places to 50 participants as part of the project but expect to integrate the model through all first aid training offered by Learning Options in the future. This group of 50 will receive a Statement of Attainment in the Certificate III in Business (Education) with the two units of competence: HLTFA301C Apply first aid and BSBOHS306B Contribute to implementing emergency prevention activities and response procedures.

September 2012
We were thrilled to be successful in obtaining funding for our 'Augmented reality in First Aid' project and are excited about the possibilities. It was great to meet everyone in Sydney on the 13th and hear about everyone else's interesting projects.
We spent the balance of the month formalising some of our timelines and starting to make initial contacts with consultants and experts in the creation of augmented reality. Finalising our Project Implementation Plan was a priority and we plan to really sink out teeth into our project in October. Looking forward to it.

October 2012
The start of the month has been busy exploring ideas and ways to bring our augmented reality project to life. We have sent some initial concepts off to the augmented reality creative team for them to quote on. There are a couple of different options in terms of producing augmented reality (AR) content so the quote will be important for us in determining which way to move forward.
We have started doing some online research into 3D imaging that already exists in the medical community that we can incorporate into the augmented reality designs allowing us to get more "bang for our buck" so to speak! We have also formed a working group that will meet later in the month to review the initial concepts, quotes and determine the best way forward. Exciting times!

November 2012
We've been exploring which components of first aid training and emergency preparedness will have the most impact in terms of augmented reality content development. Our plan is to utilise a combination of 3D images and video to produce the AR content. We've had some great meetings with people in the "AR world" and their ideas have been inspiring. We've even found we have the ability to create some AR content in-house (fairly basic level of course so far but we're excited about it!).
The next step for us is to start collecting and creating the images and videos that we will be using to create the AR content. We've also been looking at our approach to recruiting participants and, given they work in the education system, our goal is to have as many as possible confirmed prior to the break for the summer holidays.

December 2012
This month our focus has been a little more on logistics. We are working with the Department of Education to get invitations to prospective participants so that we can have a good sense of numbers going into the Christmas break. We are continuing the process of developing content and refining the components we plan to develop on the augmented reality front.

January 2013
The past month we've had the opportunity to start developing the augmented reality content for our project. We've made some exciting progress and are looking forward to further refining content over the next few weeks.
We also received a good response to our initial invitations for participants so that was encouraging.

February 2013
Our project is moving along smoothly to date. We have had strong interest in enrolling in courses and will be finalising class schedules in late February, early March. Our augmented reality content is in production and we have modified the design of “markers” to ensure greater prominence in the educational settings and therefore greater exposure.
We have been pleasantly surprised by the fact that we have been able to develop some in-house capacity to design and develop augmented reality content meaning we haven’t had to out-source as much as we originally planned on. This has allowed us to be more responsive to modifying content as we go along. So far, good.

March 2013
We have a photo and video shoot in late March to finalise our content so we can work the final images and video into the draft augmented reality content. This will be ready in early April and we should be able to put some pics up shortly.
In addition, our course content is coming along nicely and class dates have been finalised. We're in the process of confirming students and also confirming that they have the appropriate technology to bring to class to maximise their experience. Class start dates are coming up quickly - exciting :)

April 2013

We're now really close to having our final product ready to go. We've been experimenting with some different ways of utilising the augmented reality so that participants can take something away with them and also have some fun and interesting opportunities to use the AR for learning in the classroom.
We've had really strong interest in the courses and they've filled up quickly. We have two courses running in April and 2 in early May so we'll have a chance to make any adjustments between courses if needed.
So far we haven't had any major hiccups (touch wood!) and are enjoying the learnings along the way. Our big key is going to be making sure the technology runs smoothly in the classroom.

May 2013
We put through all of our First Aid in a period of 4 weeks (since the last instalment above). The classes were well attended although we found we had lots of last minute changes which tends to happen more on courses that are offered free of charge (food for thought for next time).
The AR technology worked really well. In fact, we expected to have a few more teething problems so were pleasantly surprised. The best part was that the different approach of using the augmented reality content was extremely well received. The students, many of whom had done first aid classes in the past, found that it definitely enhanced their learning. More importantly, many of them have gone back to figure out how they may be able to include AR in their own classes.
The participants were very engaged and supportive given that we are just touching the surface of AR and they have given us some great feedback and ideas for moving forward.
Now we're looking forward to the Showcase - see you all there!

June 2013 - Project wrap up
It was great to go to the showcase event in Melbourne recently and we appreciated the opportunity to meet many of you. We're definitely happy with our project and the journey has been a good one. There is more detail in our case study but here are a few of the things we experienced and learned along the way.
Overall we felt our project ran fairly smoothly. Our biggest initial challenge was finding that our content developers were unable to work with us as originally agreed. This ended up being a positive though as it forced us to explore other opportunities and we realised we could actually create the content ourselves. This has given us a much greater capacity to continue to develop AR content for all of our courses in the future.
Evaluations were completed at the end of each course and the feedback was used to refine the delivery in the following courses. This allowed us to maximise the use of the augmented reality content and provided students with positive ways to enhance their first aid learning. One of the highlights for us in terms of feedback was that 100% of students rated the experience as either "4" or "3" on a 4 - 1 point scale (where 4 indicates extremely valuable and 1 indicates not valuable).
In terms of running the courses, the largest challenge we had was last minute changes to class numbers. We felt that perhaps offering the course at no charge contributed to this. Even charging a minimal fee would likely have meant fewer last minute changes.

We were very clear with students when the classes started that we were just touching the surface of the possibilities for using augmented reality as a learning tool. As all of our participants were education professionals, we challenged them to identify ways in which they would like to see us use AR differently and to also consider ways in which they could incorporate AR into their classrooms. We received some fabulous ideas in the feedback and we'll be working to incorporate as many as we can as we go forward.

The other key learning hat we took from student feedback was that augmented reality was great as a complement to face to face learning. This will be our preference moving forward rather than trying to build it as a stand-alone e-learning tool.
